At the beginning of 2010, much to the dismay of their fans, Japanese rock band An Cafe announced that they would be going on hiatus to focus on individual projects. The band assured people that they were not breaking up though, so fans waited patiently for their return.
After 2 years of solo activities, An Cafe announced this past April that the band would be reuniting and touring through Europe as part of their "LIVE CAFE TOUR 2012 NYAPPY GO AROUND THE WORLD Ⅲ ～TADAIMA o(≧∀≦)o OKAERI o(≧∀≦)o～". While in Dortmund, Germany, the band took some time to give JpopAsia the opportunity to ask some questions about their new album, the tour and some other more private things!

Q: This is not your first time in Germany. Is there anything you’re associating with Germany?
Miku: I like Germany! There’s something that caught my attention. The fans are more Visual Kei than in Japan! I’ve already seen the fans outside and there are a lot with green, pink or yellow hair.

Q: What experiences did you gain in those years of hiatus?
Teruki: I was support drummer in some bands and also learned a lot as assistant of my teacher.
Takuya: I was support in other bands and composed songs.
Yuuki: I worked in a café and gyûdon-shop.
Miku: I had a new band and practiced playing the guitar and studied about things of other musicians.
Kanon: I had a new unit and composed songs.

Q: Why did you decided to come together right at this moment? Is there a story behind it?
Miku: Actually we wanted to come together earlier but it wasn’t possible due to contracts with our labels. But actually we felt like meeting earlier.

Q: You've already been to Germany. Did you miss anything German? Like food or drinks?
Yuuki: I missed the Cologne Cathedral!
Kanon: When we went to a restaurant we ordered Spaghetti Carbonara. And I remember salting it by myself and it was so delicious! *laughter*

Q: What’s your inspiration for your new album? Are there any musicians you look up to?
Miku: From Sixth Sense! *laughs*
Teruki: Actually there wasn’t a concept in the beginning but while being on hiatus we all improved and thought about what we could do as An Cafe now. So we all brought in our new experiences we gained while being on hiatus and the album is the result of it.

Q: Is there anything special you’re looking forward to on this tour?
Teruki: I want to do something typical in every country. And of course I want to give great lives everywhere but I want a special memory of each live. Something like: Ah! THIS happened in Germany. And THAT happened in the Netherlands. Not only the lives but also landscapes or food.

Q: Did you already gain experiences like that on this tour?
Teruki: Every country is different. That’s why we already gained different memories.

Q: While recording the songs for the new album, are there any special memories you like to remember? Anything funny?
Kanon: It doesn’t have a lot to do with the recording itself but while recording the album we all left the studio at different points of time. But we all met at the station!
Miku: That was really surprising!

Q: What are you doing in the minutes before the live starts?
Miku: I meditate. I think of nothing while sitting tailor-fashion. I just concentrate.

Q: In the past you compared Yuuki with Atze (German comedian). Are you planning to introduce him as Atze again?
*laughter*
Yuuki: That wasn’t that well received last time so maybe it’s better to stop that.
Miku: Or do you think we should?
Q: The old fans will definitely remember that!
*laughter*
All: So maybe we should do it!
Miku: Do the old fans really think he’s Atze?
Q: No! It’s just something German fans associate with Yuuki!
*laughter*
Teruki: It’s a German matter!
Miku: Are there a lot of Atze-fans among An Cafe fans?
Q: Probably not...
Miku: Do Germans like him?
Q: He’s popular here.
Everyone: Ah~ That’s cool!

Q: Miku, you have a dog called Nyappy-chan. Do the other members also have pets?
Teruki: No, but Kanon-san feeds one recently.
Kanon: Recently I’m feeding an alley cat so now it’s half of a pet cat and half of an alley cat.

Q: Is there anything you’re into recently?
Miku: Something personal...hm...Some time ago I’ve started playing on Nintendo 3DS. Actually I had no time for games but recently I found some time and started playing.
Teruki: I like Rurouni Kenshin!
Q: There’s already a movie. Do you know it?
Teruki: Ah, I don’t know it! I also didn’t finish reading the Manga. I read it before leaving Japan.
Yuuki: (whispers something)
Miku: Yuuki also said something!
Yuuki: I didn’t!
*laughter*
Miku: He said “Takeru Satou”.
Yuuki: No no no! I didn’t!
Miku: He’s the main actor! In Germany Yuuki is Atze, in Japan he’s Takeru Satou! And in England he’s Garfield!
Yuuki: I’m not! I’m not!
*laughter*
Takuya: I like Shochu, Japanese alcohol. When I’m in Japan I’m drinking it a lot but while being in Europe I don’t drink it.
Kanon: Recently I like reading books. I read one in the plane but then it was a little bit boring and I put it away. In the end I forgot it in the plane. That’s really sad!

Q: Miku and Teruki have body piercings. Do the other members also have piercings?
Miku: Recently I don’t have any. The reason is that it hurts if I get into a fist fight.
Teruki: I have less than earlier (he’s showing his ear piercings). But having some doesn’t matter for me because if there’s a fight I just ran away! *laughs*

Q: If you watch the band’s comments you notice that Yuuki is bullied often. Especially by Miku and Teruki. Is there a reason?
Miku: It’s not like that! I want to explain it. There’s a producer called Yuki Takahashi and he wants Yuuki to be in his character. A character that is bullied by others.
Teruki: Because Yuuki is cute!!
Yuuki: No No!!
Miku: But in private he’s the one who’s teasing us! I’m very sad!
Yuuki: No! That’s not true! *laughter*

Q: What’s your favorite song off the new album?
Miku: For me, that has changed. I liked "amazing blue", but now my favorite song is "Jibun Setsumeisho". When I sing it on stage I have the feeling to become one with the fans. When I’m singing "amazing blue" the other members tease me...
Yuuki: No no!
*laughter*
Yuuki: I like "Bird no Higeki". I like the song’s lyrics.
Kanon: I like "amazing blue" the most.
Teruki: "Natsu no Owari"!
Takuya: I like "Tsuki ni Murakumo" the most.

Q: Tomorrow there’s a signing session in Munich. Do you prepare for it in a special way?
Kanon: We’re very close to the fans at singing sessions, so I’m using perfume to smell good.
Miku: Because all the fans are there we’re make sure to brush our teeth carefully.
Teruki: To not stink!
Miku: When we hug them.
*laughter*

Q: We know that Miku does kick-boxing. What about the other members?
Kanon: Recently I like riding my bike!
Teruki: We don’t do sports...

Q: Do you like any special fashion brands?
Miku: Recently I like wearing hats from New Era.
Yuuki: I like UNI-CLO and HEATTECH.
Miku: And something more Visual Kei-like is...
Teruki: We have to say MALKOMALKAI!!
Miku: All our tour clothes are from MALKOMALKA! And the monkey that you can see on MALKOMALKA’s clothes is called Yuukkiki. That’s not a lie! Real story!
